Citrus County, Fla. — During National Home Visiting Week, which occurs April 20-24, the Florida Department of Health in Citrus County (DOH-Citrus) recognizes its Healthy Start program.
Healthy Start is a free home visiting program that helps those who are pregnant, as well as families with infants or children up to age 3.
Participants receive education and information about having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Counselors provide education on newborn and infant care, breastfeeding support, and care coordination. Counselors can also help with referrals for other services, such as smoking cessation.
While most participants choose to see their Healthy Start counselor in their own home, visits can take place at the Healthy Start office, or in another convenient location, like a public park, restaurant or coffee shop.
To qualify, an individual or family must live in the state of Florida. There are no income requirements, and services are voluntary and free of charge.
