Used needles or “sharps,” pose a risk to public health. Because of this risk, the Florida Department of Health in Citrus County (DOH-Citrus) offers a no cost collection program for used needles, syringes, and other potentially dangerous items. Individuals with these items can bring them to DOH-Citrus for safe disposal.
Sharps can be dropped off at the front desk of the health department, during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.).
When bringing in sharps, they must be in a hard plastic container. DOH-Citrus sells sharps collection containers for $10 each. You can also use an old laundry detergent bottle or other hard plastic container. Do not use recycled food containers, plastic storage bags, or any other container made of thin plastic.
Problems Caused by Sharps
Sharps should be disposed of properly. They should never be put out with residential garbage at the curb.
Used needles that are not disposed of properly can:
- Clog sewers and lift stations
- End up at recycling centers
- Puncture solid waste containers and injure workers
- Be contaminated with hepatitis, HIV, and other serious or fatal diseases
