Citrus County, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Citrus County (DOH-Citrus) has expanded its car seat check program by adding car seat technicians to better serve local families.
During the first week of January, three Healthy Start staff members completed a week-long “car seat boot camp” to earn their certification as a National Child Passenger Safety Technician. A fourth staff member participated as an observer, to fulfill requirements to become a car seat technician trainer.
Car seat safety is critical. Between 2019 and 2023, the rate of hospitalizations in Citrus County due to motor vehicle accidents for children ages 1 to 5 more than doubled, according to FLHealthCHARTS.
DOH-Citrus now offers free car seat checks twice a month, for parents and caregivers who want to ensure their child’s car seat is installed correctly. Certified technicians will demonstrate proper installation based on the child’s age and size, answer questions, and share tips to keep your child safe every time you drive.
Car Seat Check Schedule:
• Second Wednesday of each month: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
• Fourth Thursday of each month: 5:30 – 7 p.m.
